The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council is a statutory body corporate created under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic) (the Act). It is the first all Aboriginal Council created under Victorian law and is made up of eleven Traditional Owners from around the State.

The Council is responsible for a number of functions including registering, monitoring and supporting Regional Aboriginal Parties (RAPs) to exercise Cultural Heritage responsibilities in their local areas as well as the management of Aboriginal Ancestral Remains and Secret and Sacred Objects. The Council is supported by the Office of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council to carry out and implement this work.

The Senior Project Officer within the Ancestral Remains Unit (ARU) takes a lead role in supporting the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council (VAHC) fulfil its functions under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, particularly in relation to Ancestral Remains and Secret or Sacred Objects.

The position will manage new reports of Ancestral Remains and Secret and Sacred Objects and existing cases currently managed by Council. The Senior Project Officer ARU must be able to undertake their role in accordance with the Act and provide written reports and authoritative advice to Council and staff on the progress and results from work in this area.

The Senior Project Officer ARU must be able to interpret statutes, demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of issues impacting on the protection of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage in Victoria and take the lead in communicating with Traditional Owners and other stakeholders.
