The Cultural Tour Guide is responsible for leading groups of diverse visitors safely and seamlessly on Country, utilising best-practice guiding and tourism operational procedures at all times. It is the role of the Tour Guide to showcase Taungurung cultural values, heritage, language and stories in a way that will emotionally connect visitors and educate them about culture and Country.
No prior experience is necessary but a commitment to undertaking the full tour guide training program is required. We can shape the role according to your skills and interests and provide a supportive team to help you on this journey. This is a casual role and will require a mixture of weekday/weekend work.
This role is part of the Tourism Team within the Community & Culture Department. The Tourism Team is responsible for shaping a growing Taungurung-led tourism program – designing exciting visitor experiences on Country that will inspire advocates for Taungurung aspirations. Tourism is a new venture for TLaWC that will bring many positives to the Taungurung Nation including revenue, jobs and social & cultural connections. As part of the team, Tour Guides will work with a variety of people from all walks of life and have many opportunities to be out on Country – delivering a range of exciting tours and experiences.
Key Duties
- Support the TLaWC Tourism Development Manager with the design and implementation of a suite of visitor experiences and tours on Country
- Lead safe and responsible tours in accordance with TLaWC policies, guidelines and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property protocols
- Effectively deliver TLaWC visitor experiences as per schedule and with high visitor satisfaction
- Provide excellent customer service and cultural interpretation to a diversity of visitors
- Confidently and safely drive the TLaWC bus
- Display commitment to best practice guiding and self-directed learning and development
- Educate visitors to be respectful of our natural and cultural environments
Key Selection Criteria
Essential capacities
- A genuine desire to connect people with Taungurung culture and Country
- Communication and customer service skills
- General knowledge of Taungurung History, Culture and Country
- Subject matter expert on an aspect of Taungurung culture

- Proven experience in leadership or leading groups safely and effectively
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Effective time management and organisational skills
- Personal qualities of integrity, good judgement, and emotional intelligence
- A positive and professional attitude
Successful applicants will need to be willing to undertake;
- First aid training
- Working with children check
- Internal OHS training
- Tour guide training program
- Heavy Vehicle License training (if required)
To work with TLaWC applicants must have
- An understanding of the importance of Country to Traditional Owners and the recognition of Taungurung as Traditional Owners
- An ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people
- A commitment to Aboriginal self determination
